I agree. I would not pay a vet at that rate. I do my own fecals, but have had fecal exams done on my goats. 80 goats costs me $240 two summers ago. Blood labs $240. I thought it was extremely expensive then? I am counting my blessing, as I type. AND, no, it does not sound harsh. We all face termination at some point. In your case $150 nearly buys a nice digital microscope. I do wish her a complete turn around, but I believe we all understand. Wishing you the best.
***Edited: I have been meaning to ask, if you have tried giving C&D Antitoxin?
No I haven't... That is the last ditch I am going to give it to her if her turds come back.... It is not avaiable up here for us... My vet jump through hoops to get us a 50 cc bottle of it so we don't use it too freely but we are going to try it on her.
Thanks for reminding me!
Yeah I don't know why they have to rip people off with blood and fecals. it's redonkulas!
Yeah I am in Canada and we have different laws on blood based medicine for livestock.. My vet literally pulled teeth to get it for me, took 3 months to get it here and I can't use it on anything that may go to slaughter.
So now that hubby decided she will be dog food if she doesn't turn around I can give it a try on her as she would be fed to our dogs and not who knows where she would go at auction.
Yes I know it is outrageous! I d**n near came un glued when I did fecal and labs on Vanessa (milk goat) and my bill was 500 plus gst. I never did tell Bruce (hubby) what it costed me! he would have died if I would have told him... but I simply can't do it on just any goat walking around here, just not affordable.
I run adds on CL and charge $5.00 per test for fecal. I have gotten to where I have several repeat clients. Saw my first Lung Worm this week end while running tests for a man in sw Kansas. I can not imagine paying that much for either test. I guess it was a slow week for the vet. It takes me 30-45 min to run a batch of 6 tests and make my report to the owners.
Very good! thank you! I have used safeguard in the past with poor results on the goats... but I have not tried it on her so I will do it this morning.... she is back to pooping and the anti toxin didn't do a thing, so I wasted a good bunch of it on her..
Is she any better? I know how frustrating this is for you and how hard it is when any of our critters are ill and we can't make them better. Just figured it couldn't hurt to throw this one out there for you to read and that maybe something in it might help? Keep us posted with how this turns out. Hoping for the best!
