Hi. We have a 9 month old boer doe who seems to have an injury on her back left leg. She doesn't put any weight on it. We caught her and felt her leg and her hoof. That didn't seem to bother her; she may have twitched when we were checking the hoof, but no real signs of pain. She seems to be getting better in the last few days, not putting much weight on it still but she does go out with the other goats and graze. Today, we noticed our 1 month old buckling is limping the same way. Same leg, same symptoms. Both seem to be eating fine and don't seem to be in alot of pain. We're a little worried that it could be something contagious? Any ideas?
I don't believe it would be anything contagious, sounds like a freak luck thing. Has it been really rainy or wet where you are--she might have some type of scald inbetween her toes, check for milky white looking spots/tender areas/soft spots, sometimes some iodine put on it will help to heal it and to toughen it up. Check the baby too, he might have stepped on something or twisted it--one month olds do play alot.
sounds like hoof rot or scald to me and it is contagious if that is what it is the hoof will smell bad if rot or red between the toes if scald. coppertox seems best for treatment if it is real bad , I use bleach water in a spray bottle for mild cases spray two times a day, thier are several ways to treat hoof problems from bleach to la200 injection. I have not had any hoof problems sence switching to sweetlix minerals and had alot of problems before so you may want to look at what minerals you feed as well. I try to look at the big picture. Minerals play such a large part of what I call total health .
