I have a young doe who kidded 3 weeks ago. She had 2 healthy kids and passed the afterbirth no problem but she still looks like she has a "baby bump" on her right side. Otherwise she seems completely normal. She is eating fine, temperature is normal. I have dewormed her and tried "bumping" (did not feel any hard knobby things) I am mystified as to what might be causing this. Any ideas? suggestions?
It takes time to shrink the uterus back down and for internal organs to reposition because things get pushed inside to make room for the kids and afterbirth. I always wonder if I got them all and what not because some do still look like there could be more. I rely on bouncing. It has never let me down yet. My does usually present the kids on the left side more than the right. If there was no odor or foul discharge then it sounds like things are alright. I have heard of a case where a fetus was calcified inside and encased inside a doe who could not conceive, she was sent in for meat and there they discovered why she quit taking when she was bred back. How common that is I don't know. I also don't know if she showed signs of being ill. All I know is she ran with bucks and acted bucky. I always wonder if does have anything in there and they get kneaded on a bit like bread doe if they let me. I have one here who looks pretty heavy and I felt her tums today to see if I could push it in and she has a big hay belly and got offended I even bothered her. She took off kicking her heels up at me and bellyaching like a cow moos over it. You would feel something hard in the triangle in front of the udder underneath if your doe has failed to push them all out. I think she did because her afterbirth was also expelled. I had a single born to a doe who always gives twins or better. I just had to except and tell myself "That's all your getting this time". So he is a big buckling and she looked nervous into the next pens at the others with more than one but I reassured her that things turned out right. Maybe her body needed a rest.
And she might be like that for a long time, I mean hey, I had my last baby 3 years ago and my stomach is still all stretched out lol. But seriously, both goatguru and mom are right, if she still had a kid in there you would smell it for sure, and give her time she should go back to normal or that might be the new her. I have one doe that always looks like she has 3 or 4 kids in her, even when she has small kids to her side.
