Udder,mastitis,congested,or blown udder?

Friday; Doe with 3 day old twins has perfect sack.The next morning the udder halves are one whole and hard.It is almost unmilkable.Clear fluid is milked out(only a couple squirts)Then white clots come.The udder is not hot,not red,not bruised. Mastitis strips says green on the right side,the left side is normal according to the test,but the left udder side is gone.I have not had to deal with mastitis,but have seen it.It doesn't seem like mastitis.What can I do.Seems like a blown udder or teet,but can't seem to find what I need to help her.It is getting harder and can only get a few squirts of clear to yellowish liquid out.Udder is painfully swollen,she wants to lay around,but will get up for food.The owners have written her off as a lost cause.I hope to save her!

Might try this, about three times a day, give her 2/10 ths of a cc of oxytocin. Then milk out the udder (I know, nothing there,but go through the motions) try this for a couple days along with lots of massaging. Everytime you are around her massage the udder. Offer her some parsley. If it is what she needs, she will eat it. I know that there is an herb for milk letdown, but not finding it right off hand but will try to locate it this evening when I get home. See if this will work.

No oxytocin available to me.I did infuse 10 cc of Bovi Sera in her left udder last night(small teat canal) and the swelling came to a stand still.She runs when she sees me coming. Do you think it is just congestion? I will try to milk her here shortly to see what is going on now.

too bad, oxitocin is what causes the milk to let down. When the kids suck it causes small doses of oxitocin to be released into the body, sometimes when there is a slight malfunction, and this doesn't take place, you can replicate it with small doses and make her body think it is supposed to try harder to let milk down. It has worked for me a couple times.

Thanks for the tip brandy.... I keep a small amount of that on hand for emergencies, next time I'll try that instead of going nuts because my best milker is drying up on one side....... or would it be to late?? Right side is normal, left side contains very little milk. Kids are now 5 weeks old, they nurse mom mostly but I do supply a bottle a day to them (that's all they'll take won't take no more)

this sounds more like mastitis to me and the test obviously confirmed it.
can you take her temperature? i would squirt some of the fluid in a sterile container and send it in for testing so you will know what kind of bacteria you are dealing with.. this doe probably needs systemic antibiotic from the vet.

i would recommend to call them first and get instructions how to send it. you can also use your state lab, but ask first how much it cost. LU does not charge for it, or so i heard.

Try rubbing peppermint oil on the udder it will help with the soreness and let the milk down.

The mastitis test will pick up any abnormalities,not just infection.The udder has not gotten any bigger since I infused Bovi into it.Her temp is normal.I did put her on antibiotics to be on the safe side so testing now would probably be useless.I would say she is going to dry up now since the teet does not want to milk for the first few squirt attemps.I believe it was congestion due to the swelling and hardness on the top back section.The babies are on the bottle and pooped dark orange on the second day.That also supports my theory of congestion because it to to long to produce a bowel movement.So many people think,just because the babies get on and suck for even a few seconds that they are getting something.She probably never even let down her colostrum.

Don't know if she was tested or not but her knees don't creek and she has some age on her.

she does not need to have big knees to have a hard udder from cae.
