One of my does has appx 5 lumps in her udder. 3 are visable and the others you can feel if you palpate the udder. She is still nursing, there is no heat, her milk seems fine. Is this CL or something else?

It does not sound like C.L , C.L is usually first seen in the lymph node areas , most common in the jaw area or just under the ear or on the tip of the front shoulder's .

yeah, don't sound just right for CL......... has she been bitten by some bugs? Are the bumps soft or very hard? have they ruptured? is she running a fever? does massaging them make them smaller and go away? sorry for all the questions, but just trying to get a picture in my head and oh, how big are the lumps?

Hi,
I've heard of does getting abscesses in their udder. Or maybe they're from an old mastitis infection?

No fever, been pretty cold for bugs although there are no signs of bites, the bumps feel like CL lumps as they are very firm and have not changed in over a week. They are about the size of a walnut or a bit bigger and I have not massaged as she won't stand for that. She is scheduled to go to the sale barn this week and I don't want her to drag down the price of the others if she has CL. Udders have lymph nodes in them too and thought she may have the bacterium in her system and just now having symptoms. This is only her second kidding and she had no issues last year. She is also not keeping weight on or shedding her coat like the other girls. They have alfalfa mix hay, grain, and free-choice SL and ADM mineral. I have had several others turn up with lumps in the expected spots with 2 having the runny "cottage cheese" inside and 1 with consistency slightly thicker than toothpaste. These 3 all came from the same purchased herd. Lumpy udder was at that farm for a while too.

The others having it makes me wonder if perhaps she does have it. I know that the fact that she's not gaining weight and seems to be losing it is a definate sign of CL, and the toothpaste consistancy is a part of that too. If they all came from the same herd, I'd call the person that sold them to you and ask if they are having these problems as well. We almost sent our buck to a farm that had CL and I'm amazingly glad that we didn't.
Keep us posted, but to me, it does sound like what you fear it is.

Sounds as if her udder is congesting.Either babies are weaning off and her milk is kind of engorging or she is weaning them off.How old is/are the baby(ies)?

yes this definitely sounds like CL.. CL can show up in the scrotum and udder areas.. I would quarentine these goats.... You can have the puss tested but it can be costly..... I would call the former owner and see what he says.... He may have a big problem....
I know people are like out of sight out of mind and that is why I say Stay away from the sell barns because that is where people take their sick animals....

Her babies had been weaned off for about 6 weeks so she should have been past the congestion stage. She was not purchased at a sale barn but that is were she went as I did not want to keep her and would not knowingly sell her to someone. She went to a slaughter buyer. The other does purchased from the same farm at the same time have never shown any symptoms.

I had NEVER heard of CL until joining this site. Now I am PARANOID to no end. When we went to the fair with our goats there was a HUGE doe there that had a raw looking spot on both rear flanks. I thought it might be what I'd call "bed sores" from laying on a rough floor with her immense size. Now I wonder if it was active CL.
None of my goats came into DIRECT contact with this one, but there are always flies, etc., around to help "spread the joy". Good grief...now I'm going to be micro-managing every lump and bump that shows up for the next year.
Does anyone know what the incubation period is for that stuff?

if your goats did come in contact with CL then the abcesses will appear over and over again...
not every abcess that a goat gets is CL... Abcesses form when our bodies are trying to fight off a foriegn antigen such as getting stung or a splinter... CD/t shots also causes abcesses... Take in mind that this could be CL and treat it as such.... I had a goat that came up with an abcess on her side and it became as big as a golf ball... I watched it everyday as the hair fell out around it and it became soft in the center... I put on some surgical gloves and while my husband held her I sprayed the abcess with a Betadine and I squeezed .... Trust me the goat will holler... The infection came out in a toothpaste consistentcy... I squeezed until I couldn't get anymore infection out... I then sprayed it with 7% iodine and packed it with icthammol 20% ( that is a drawing salve) plus it stinks and keeps the bugs off... The abcess would heal but unfortunately it would come back... I finally culled her... I didn't want to take any chances....

None of my does that had abcesses have had them return. Also, most CL abcesses are in areas where there are lymph nodes. A raw looking spot on the flank does not sound like any CL I have ever encountered. I do not know of a set incubation time and often times animals that are healthy won't come down with an abcess even if they come in contact with the pus from one. They may carry the bacterium in their system until a time when they are under stress and then have an abcess errupt. There are as many differing opinions on how to deal with CL as there are goat owners. Each person has to decide what will work best for them. I freaked out too when I found my first CL lump. My vet told me that eventually if you own a goat you will experience CL. The doe that had lumps in her udder also had a poor hair coat and could not keep weight on even though she was on grain, sweet lix and had red eye lids so I felt it best to cull her and her offspring. The raw flank you saw could have been from flies biting and her scratching. My billy scratched a raw spot with his horns on the top of his back because of fly bites. I rubbed pine tar on it and it was healed in a few days.

I had a pygmy doe get two when she was very young, now no signs of them for years, and none of the others in the herd have shown any signs and she was never isolated. I always pay close attention to abscesses. I never had that doe tested, and I suppose there is a chance it was not CL, but it sure looked like it.
